Lorien Health Systems is a locally run chain of ten nursing home and assisted living facilities located in four Maryland counties (Howard, Baltimore, Carroll and Harford). Quality measures go from much below average to average. Lorien is a for-profit company. A study of professional journal articles released in 2009 made these findings about non-profit facilities: They delivered higher quality care than for-profit facilities for two of the four most frequently reported quality measures: more or higher quality staffing and lower incidence of pressure ulcers (bedsores). Non-profits had less use of physical restraints and fewer problems in government inspections. Nursing homes and assisted living facility residents may be subjected to physical abuse by employees or other residents and neglect by facility staff.
